Nach dem Abendmahl begibt sich Jesus (Jim Caviezel) in den Garten Gethsemane, um dort zu beten. Tief in sich gekehrt, erscheint ihm Satan und Jesus erfährt eine Vision dessen, was ihm in den kommenden Stunden widerfahren wird. Doch er widersteht der Versuchung des Bösen. Verraten von seinem Jünger Judas Ischariot wird Jesus kurze Zeit später festgenommen. Die Anführer der Pharisäer bezichtigen ihn der Gotteslästerung und verlangen seinen Tod. Jesus wird dem römischen Statthalter in Palästina, Pontius Pilatus, vorgeführt. Dieser hört sich die vorgebrachten Anschuldigungen an und erkennt schnell, dass es sich hier um einen politischen Konflikt handelt. Um einer Entscheidung aus dem Weg zu gehen, übergibt Pilatus die Angelegenheit an König Herodes. Auch dieser scheut ein Urteil und lässt Jesus zum Statthalter zurückbringen. Pontius Pilatus überlässt es nun der aufgebrachten Menge Jerusalems, offen zwischen dem Angeklagten Jesus von Nazareth und dem Verbrecher Barrabas zu entscheiden, welcher der beiden begnadigt werden soll. Das Volk entscheidet sich für Barrabas. Jesus wird den römischen Soldaten übergeben und von ihnen gefoltert. Schwer verwundet wird er wieder zu Pilatus gebracht, der ihn erneut der Menge vorführt als wolle er sagen: Ist dies nicht genug? Und abermals entzieht er sich dieser Verantwortung. Er befiehlt schließlich seinen Männern, dem Verlangen der Massen nachzugeben, die weiterhin den Tod Jesu fordern. Der weitere Leidensweg ist besiegelt. Jesus muss selbst das Kreuz durch die Straßen von Jerusalem bis nach Golgatha tragen. Dort wird er schließlich an das Kreuz geschlagen. Im Angesicht des Todes stellt sich Jesus seiner letzten Versuchung: der Angst, von seinem Vater aufgegeben worden zu sein...
'Die Passion Christi' (2004) zeigt mit beeindruckenden Bildern die letzten zwölf Stunden im Leben des Jesus von Nazareth. Bereits bevor 'Die Passion Christi' das erste Mal gezeigt wurde, sorgte Mel Gibsons Leinwandepos weltweit für immenses Aufsehen. Basierend auf historischen Quellen, ruft uns der Film mit Jim Caviezel als Jesus von Nazaret, Monica Bellucci als Magdalena, Maia Morgenstern als Maria, Luca Lionello als Judas und Hristo Shopov als Pontius Pilatus in ergreifender Authentizität und mit überwältigenden Bildern den Tag der Kreuzigung in Jerusalem ins Gedächtnis. After the Lord's Supper, Jesus (Jim Caviezel) goes to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray there. Satan appears to him deep in himself and Jesus experiences a vision of what will happen to him in the coming hours. But he resists the temptation of evil. Betrayed by his disciple Judas Iscariot, Jesus is arrested a short time later. The leaders of the Pharisees accuse him of blasphemy and demand his death. Jesus is brought before the Roman governor in Palestine, Pontius Pilate. He listens to the accusations made and quickly realizes that this is a political conflict. To avoid a decision, Pilate hands the matter over to King Herod. He also shies away from judgment and has Jesus brought back to the governor. Pontius Pilate now leaves it to the angry crowd of Jerusalem to decide openly between the accused Jesus of Nazareth and the criminal Barrabas which of the two should be pardoned. The people decide for Barrabas. Jesus is handed over to the Roman soldiers and tortured by them. Seriously wounded, he is brought back to Pilate, who again presents him to the crowd as if to say: Is this not enough? And once again he evades this responsibility. He finally commands his men to give in to the demands of the masses, who continue to demand the death of Jesus. The further ordeal is sealed. Jesus himself has to carry the cross through the streets of Jerusalem to Golgotha. There he is finally nailed to the cross. In the face of death, Jesus faces his last temptation: the fear of having been abandoned by his Father...
'The Passion of the Christ' (2004) shows the last twelve hours in the life of Jesus of Nazareth with impressive images. Even before 'The Passion of the Christ' was shown for the first time, Mel Gibson's screen epic caused an immense stir worldwide. Based on historical sources, the film with Jim Caviezel as Jesus of Nazareth, Monica Bellucci as Magdalene, Maia Morgenstern as Mary, Luca Lionello as Judas and Hristo Shopov as Pontius Pilate reminds us of the day of the crucifixion in Jerusalem with poignant authenticity and overwhelming images. All the characters in the film speak the language they would have spoken at the time. This means Aramaic for the Jews - including Jesus and his disciples - and a kind of 'street Latin' for the Romans. Director Gibson has succeeded in creating a unique work in his third directorial work. His adaptation of the most important story of mankind shows the audience the last suffering of Christ in a never before-experienced, moving closeness.
