„Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!” hieß das erste, 1978 von Brian Eno in Köln produzierte und veröffentlichte Album. Mit ihm wurden fünf Musiker aus Akron, Ohio, über Nacht zu Stars der New-Wave-Bewegung. Sie trugen Overalls, futuristische Brillen und Blumentöpfe auf dem Kopf, servierten einen oft gespenstisch anmutenden Industrie-Beat und predigten den Fans, dass die Menschheit sich in einem Prozess der De-Evolution befinde. Devo hatten in den achtziger Jahren Hits wie „Turnaround“, „Disco Dancer“ oder „Girl U Want“, die später von Bands wie Nirvana, Soundgarden und sogar Robert Palmer gecovert wurden. Als New Wave endgültig out war, löste sich die Band um den Sänger und Keyboarder Mark Mothersbaugh 1991 auf. Mothersbaugh gründete eine eigene Multimedia-Firma, die Soundtracks, Videoclips und sogar ein Computerspiel produzierte. Doch am Anfang dieses Jahrtausends wollte er es noch einmal wissen, reanimierte Devo und ließ sich 2003 bei einer Fernost-Tournee von japanischen Fans feiern. Dabei entstand die DVD Live In The Land Of The Rising Sun. Auf ihr demonstrieren die leicht in die Jahre gekommenen Musiker, dass sie immer noch für ein außergewöhnliches Spektakel gut sind. Das aufgezeichnete Konzert ist eine Mischung aus Liveshow und vorproduzierten, ziemlich abgedrehten Videoclips. Musikalisch servieren Devo natürlich ihre größten Erfolge „Girl U Want“, „Satisfaction“, „Mongoloid“ oder „Whip It“, aber auch weniger bekannte Titel wie „Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA“, „Uncontrollable Urge“, „Jocko Homo“ oder „Freedom Of Choice“, das in den achtziger Jahren nur als kurzes Instrumental bekannt war. An Bonusmaterial enthält die Silberscheibe den unveröffentlichten Live-Clip „Gut Feeling“, ein Interview mit Ober-Devo Mark Mothersbaugh und seltenes Bildmaterial.

"Q: Are we not men? A: We Are Devo!" was the name of the first album, produced and released in 1978 by Brian Eno in Cologne. With him, five musicians from Akron, Ohio, became stars of the New Wave movement overnight. They wore overalls, futuristic glasses and flower pots on their heads, served up an often spooky industrial beat and preached to fans that humanity was in a process of de-evolution. Devo had hits like "Turnaround", "Disco Dancer" or "Girl U Want" in the eighties, which were later covered by bands like Nirvana, Soundgarden and even Robert Palmer. When New Wave was finally out, the band around singer and keyboardist Mark Mothersbaugh disbanded in 1991. Mothersbaugh founded his own multimedia company, which produced soundtracks, video clips and even a computer game. But at the beginning of this millennium he wanted to try it again, reanimated Devo and was celebrated by Japanese fans on a tour of the Far East in 2003. This resulted in the DVD Live In The Land Of The Rising Sun. On it, the slightly aging musicians demonstrate that they are still good for an extraordinary spectacle. The recorded concert is a mixture of live show and pre-produced, rather wacky video clips. Musically, Devo of course serve up their greatest successes "Girl U Want", "Satisfaction", "Mongoloid" or "Whip It", but also lesser-known titles such as "Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA", "Uncontrollable Urge", "Jocko Homo" or "Freedom Of Choice", which was only known as a short instrumental in the eighties. As for bonus material, the silver disc contains the unreleased live clip "Gut Feeling", an interview with head devo Mark Mothersbaugh and rare footage.
